Handling water damage is something often and appropriately left to the professionals. On the surface it may seem like something easy to do yourself but there are some serious considerations any would-be DIY enthusiast should keep in mind before embarking down the path of self-remediation. For instance, did you know that the way a water loss is cleaned up depends on many different factors?  The science of water damage mitigation doesn’t allow for a one-size-fits-all kind of formula. One of the most impactful and variable of all these factors is the category of water in question. If unaware, there are actually three categories of water damage:

Category 1 – Often referred to as “Clean Water,” these cases come from water sources that do not contain contaminants that could pose potential threats to humans. This would include sources such as a broken supply line, a tub overflow or malfunctions with water lines leading to appliance failure, such as an ice maker line.

Category 2 – We use the term “Grey Water” when referencing water that contains a significant amount of chemical, biological or physical contaminants. These cases are typically from toilet overflows (urine only), sump pump failures and overflows from dishwashers or washing machines.

Category 3 – The most severe of water damage categories, we call this “Black Water.” These types of contamination are extremely unsanitary and can contain a wide variety of harmful bacteria and possible disease-causing agents. These types of water damage are most commonly found from sewage backups, toilet overflows containing feces and flood waters from rivers, streams or seawater.

The way we approach cleaning for each category of water is drastically different.
